boogie

boogie
Robert Chapman’s Dictionary of American Slang lists twelve different meanings of boogie, one of which is ‘a black person’. It occurs in that meaning in An American Dream, by Norman Mailer. A detective who is beating up a prisoner says: ‘Goddamn you, you Goddamn stubborn boogie.’ H.L.Mencken, in The American Language, thinks that the term might be a ‘Southern variant of bogey’, meaning the devil or a goblin. He also says: ‘In the South boogie man is still one of the names of the Devil.’
